Graphic Novel: Update #9

August 25th, 2008

Things are starting to get a little more funky. We’ve started the mockup illustrations, and lemme tell ya’: they’re more fun than innertubing off the Grand Coulee Dam.

Storyboarding is not 100% finished: there are elements that need wrapping up, and a couple scenes that need to be fleshed out. That’s ok, though, because they’ll come quickly as we move along on mock-up work.

We threw in one of the mock-up pages to show off. This is the draft for page 10 of the book. It is a pretty accurate representation of what the completed mock-up will look like. The beauty of these is that they not only hone the compositions from storyboarding, but they leave very little muscle work for the rendering phase. That means I’ll be able to focus just on making the page pretty instead of having to worry about what a robot looks like when he’s upside down.

These take about an 1 to 2 hours to punch out, and I plan to expedite the process a little bit more to push it along. As it stands, we won’t make the mock-up date, and I’ll have to get along a little further before I can accurately estimate completion date. I’m hoping for the first week in September.

The Ian Report: Post-Production Update #419

August 24th, 2008

Some excellent progress this week! We got the deadlines out for a few of the key models, and they’re being met excellently.

Paul’s doing some unbelievably incredible work on the Police Lifter, updating twice daily for the past few days, each time with INCREDIBLE advances on the crazy complex model. I’m excited to be able to texture and perhaps animate it!

I also textured his other model from a while ago, the BEAM Satellite, and rendered out a few shots with it. It’s a gorgeous model, and the shots were equally so.

Allan has recently joined up with us, and he’s jumped right in by working on texturing on the Paddywagon (modeled by Dolf), so say hello to Allan!

I think at last count there are a good dozen guys working hard on things, and the updates are starting to come in with increasing swiftness! It’s a lot of emails- but it’s darn good stuff.

I’ll keep you posted!

The Gamers: Dorkness Rising

August 21st, 2008

Jen Page (our own Xing Xing Fix) stars in the principle cast of The Gamers: Dorkness Rising. The movie is available now on DVD through www.anthemDVD.com. If you are a gamer or just love to laugh, check out this hilarious comedy.

Dorkness has Risen! Announcing The Gamers: Dorkness Rising distributed by Anthem Pictures!
Dead Gentlemen Productions signs with Anthem Pictures to distribute The Gamers: Dorkness Rising.

Charles Adelman, the president of Anthem Pictures, described their acquisition of The Gamers: Dorkness Rising in one word: “Awesome!” Adelman noted that Anthem Pictures sells to a number of retailers and rental companies, including Netflix, Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, Best Buy, Amazon.com, Target, and Borders. They will also be selling DVDs to Paizo Publishing, LLC, who will be the primary sub distributor for The Gamers: Dorkness Rising into the hobby game industry.

The Gamers: Dorkness Rising follows Lodge, Dungeon Master and budding writer, who wants his gaming group to finish their adventure. Unfortunately, they’re more interested in seducing barmaids, mooning their enemies, and setting random villagers on fire. Desperate to rein in his players, Lodge injects two newbies into the fray: a non-player character controlled by Lodge, who the power gamers immediately distrust, and the rarest gamer of all — a girl. Can the group overcome their bickering to save the kingdom, or will the evil necromancer Mort Kemnon triumph unopposed? A parody of fantasy films and the adventure gaming community, The Gamers: Dorkness Rising is a hilarious romp through the world of sword and sorcery — in this case, a world of exploding peasants, giant house cats, and undead roast turkeys. The trailer can be found at www.the-gamers.com.

Shot in high definition, The Gamers: Dorkness Rising is the most ambitious feature film that Dead Gentlemen Productions has produced to date. It was test screened in 2006 at the Gen Con game fair to standing ovations and standing room only. Creators of the Dragonlance novels & New York Times Bestselling authors, Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis, called it “A critical hit!… Original and funny - a real treat for fans of both fantasy and gaming.” You can find other responses to the film and add your own on their listing at IMDb.

Bethany Jones does some touch-up on Space Laser’s makeup on the set of Icaria’s Floating Restaurant.

How old are you and why?
20, why not?

What got you started in film work?
A lust for an epic adventure.

What are you working on in the movie?
Helped with a lot of the intial organization.

What are your favorite movies?
Gladitor, Waterworld, The Postman

What would your mom say about Project London, the movie?
Me: Hey Mom, I’m working on a movie!
Mom: …
Me: Hey!… MOM!!!
Mom: (after being annoyed with me for bothering her) What?!?
Me: Nothing…
Mom: What is it?
Me: Oh, I’m just working on this movie.
Mom: Oh, thats great!
Me: Yeah…

What super power would you choose and why?
Making everyone free. Because if I make everyone free then they surely will elect me President of the United States of the World!

What super power do you actually have?
The power… to move you (sweet guitar riff)

What are your favorite bands and/or albums?
Anything with energy, I love local music

If there were tigers roaming the streets and you had to defend yourself, what weapon would you choose?
Weapon: My Mom
Reason: She’d do anything to protect me. True story, she ran off a black bear from our campsite. The bear was raiding our cooler, she didn’t want her babies to go hungry and her motherly instincts took over.

What would you like to tell us about yourself that we didn’t ask?
Check out www.pugetsoundoff.org.

What question are you glad we didn’t ask?
If freedom isn’t free (it cost a buck o’ five) why are some people not pitchin’ in?

Editor’s Note: Here you see a wicked awesome sequence of photos (click on ‘em) featuring Tyler and Justin Tracy. In this scene, Tyler plays a valet at the entrance of Icaria’s Floating Restaurant who happens to be in the wrong place when Justin’s character (Dominic) decides to unload some of his anger and frustration. All three photos were shot inside of one second. Tyler was flipped onto his bum probably 30 times to be sure we got it right.

The Ian Report: Post-Production Update #418

August 17th, 2008

What’s that smell in the air? Is it breakfast? Is it aftershave? Fermented apple juice?

No! It’s the smell of progress! Embodied by the scent of hard-working Computer Graphics Artists and Audio Folks across the globe!

All of Reel 2 was completed this week and shown to the producers! We now have tentative dates for completing each reel. Meaning more and more reels will be able to be shipped out to the Audio Guys.

At the end of every day I’m able to send Jen Forbes a list of completed shots and sequences, and she’s able to change them over to the completed green [on our master tracking list]—and the pace is accelerating!

Some day… some day… that whole list of 475 shots (thus far) will be a pleasant shade of green.

Picture Elements
95%: Picture lock
35%: Graphics (2D eye-candy througout) done
65%: Models for animation created
30%: Animations created
30%: Rendering done
46%: Compositing done
14%: Grading done
78%: Opening title sequence done
00%: Closing credit roll done

(Notably, the only thing changed here is the amount of compositing. At some point I’ll talk with Jen and see if she can break down our sheet and get some real actual numbers, as opposed to my estimations)

Graphic Novel: Update #8

August 16th, 2008

Storyboarding has been like a large ogre. It’s been like an ugly, grumpy, abominable snowman living in my bedroom for the past couple months. And I say enough’s enough. It’s getting finished this weekend. I don’t care whether it begs to stay around or not.

Immediately we will then begin on the mock-up, which I am extremely excited about. We’ll be seeing some real, life-sized, presentable stuff. It’ll be a nice change of pace.

Keep it groovy, everyone.
